LambdaOBD
Privacy Policy
Last updated:
LambdaOBD is an app for reading your car’s diagnostic data through an OBD-II adapter. This policy explains what the app stores, what it never collects, and why it asks for the permissions it does. In short: everything stays on your device.
What the app stores, on your device only
- Your garage: the vehicles you add, with the details you enter (such as make, model, year, engine, nickname and mileage) and the VIN when your car reports it.
- Scans: the fault codes and related data read from your car.
- Guided diagnoses you run, and their results.
- Health checks: the results of the checks you run, kept with the car they were made on. A PDF report is created only when you choose to share it.
- Recordings of live sensor values, and your drives.
- The last adapter you connected and your car’s protocol, so the next connection is quick.
- Your settings, and which tips you have already seen.
- Pro: Google Play tells the app whether you bought Pro; the app keeps only that yes/no on your device. Google Play’s own privacy policy covers the purchase.
This data is kept in the app’s private storage. Other apps cannot read it.
Fault code explanations (from the open OBDex database) and VIN decoding (from the U.S. NHTSA database) ship inside the app and work offline: no VIN or code is sent anywhere.
What leaves your device
Nothing, unless you choose to share it. When you export a recording as a CSV file, or share a health check as a PDF, Android’s share sheet sends that file to the app you pick. From then on, that app’s terms apply to it.
What the app does not do
LambdaOBD has no user account, no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no tracking of any kind. It does not use the internet.
Permissions
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth), on Android 12 and newer: to find and connect to your OBD-II adapter. The app declares that it does not use this permission to work out your location.
- Bluetooth and location, on Android 11 and older only: on those versions Android requires the location permission to search for Bluetooth devices. LambdaOBD never reads or stores your location.
- Google Play billing: so you can buy LambdaOBD Pro through Google Play.
- Vibration: for the short haptic feedback when you tap.
- Audio settings: requested by the audio library the app uses, so the alert chime can play alongside your music or navigation.
The app asks for nothing else: no internet access, no access to your files, photos, contacts or microphone.
Deleting your data
Delete a vehicle in the Garage to remove it together with its history. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android’s settings, removes everything.
When you write to us
The app sends us nothing. If you email us, we use your message and your address only to answer you.
Children
LambdaOBD is a tool for car owners and is not directed at children.
